difference between photoshop and illustrator

Both Photoshop and Illustrator are Graphics Designing software and they fulfill their respective purposes in their own way. Before exploring the difference between Photoshop and Illustrator it is important to know that both these software are greatly being used in the Graphic Designing industry and in my opinion they are both must-have software for every Graphic Designer because in one way or the other he is going to need them.

I want you to follow along till the end of this article carefully in order to get to know about it in detail. I’ll try to make it easy and comprehensive for you to understand the difference between the two.

1. Understanding Photoshop and Illustrator

In simple words, both the software Photoshop and Illustrator are the most popular software developed by Adobe and they both serve different purposes because the concepts on the basis of which these two are made are different from each other.

1.1 What is Photoshop?

Photoshop is actually a raster and bitmap-based graphic designing software that is greatly used for Photo creation and editing. It is also a resolution-dependent software which means that it works on the basis of pixels and the dimensions of a project are defined on the basis of pixels per inch.

1.2 What is Illustrator?

Illustrator is an advanced Vector-based Graphics Designing software and it is greatly used for making Logos, Cartoons, etc. It is not a resolution-dependent software which means that it doesn’t work on the basis of pixels and the dimensions of a project are defined on the basis of inches.

2. What’s the difference between Photoshop and Illustrator?

Photoshop Vs Illustrator

Adobe Photoshop

  • Photoshop is best for Photo Editing and Designing because it includes unique filters, special effects, and other tools.
  • As we know that Photoshop is a raster or resolution based software so the photos can lose their quality when we are scaling them up or down or you can say that when we are zooming in or out.
  • It is made possible with Photoshop that one can have complete control over the project with the capability of editing an image pixel by pixel.
  • Basically, it was developed for photographers but it has evolved and grown over time and now it can serve different purposes and artists can use it for different tasks to meet their needs.
  • It is used for Photo creation and editing, Graphic Design, Website mockups, banner ads, etc.
  • It is not made for Vector based graphic designing so it is not a good option for that.
  • The standard file formats for Adobe Photoshop are JPEG, TIFF, or PNG. Although, you can save your whole Photoshop project in PSD file format.

Adobe Illustrator

  • Illustrator is best for creating Logos, Vector graphics of any type, Cartoons, posters, symbols, icons, etc.
  • It isn’t a raster or pixel based software but it uses mathematical constructs to create vector based graphics which means that it is mainly built for vector based graphic designing.
  • A vector graphic that is designed in illustrator never loses its quality when it is scaled up and down or when it is zoomed in or out.
  • In the case of a vector graphic made in Illustrator, one can get a better print output of it as it is totally not resolution dependent.
  • Adobe Illustrator can’t be used to make changes in or modify images that are already created as we can do in Photoshop and also the filters and special effects that are available in Photoshop aren’t available in Illustrator.
  • The main concept that exists in Illustrator is that it works by drawing lines either straight or curved which are connected and created using dots and they never lose their quality.
  • The standard file formats for Adobe Illustrator are AI, EPS, and SVG and it is also capable of exporting images in other formats like JPG and PNG but once it is done the image is automatically converted into a raster image.

4. Which one is the right choice for you?

The answer to this question totally depends on the type of work that you need to do or the one to which you are connected. Both the software are very popular for their respective functionalities and are greatly being used around the world. In simple words, if your work requires you to mostly work with vector graphics then illustrator is the right choice for you.

But if your daily work needs require you to work on raster images or working on the pixels of images or use different special effects or filters then you should probably go for Adobe Photoshop. But I personally recommend you to use and keep both the software if it is possible for you because when they are used together they can be used for multiple purposes and they can make much of the job really easy for you.

5. Conclusion

Both Photoshop and Illustrator are great software and are the most used software in the Graphics Designing industry. Photoshop is a raster and bitmap-based software in which the dimensions of a project are defined on the basis of pixels per inch. On the other hand, Illustrator is a vector-based graphic designing software in which the dimensions are defined on the basis of Inches.

They are both used for different jobs and neither of them can replace the other. One is used for working on pixel-based images whereas the other is used in making illustrative vector-based graphic designs.
