This is because knowing about an IDE plays an important role in the learning stage of new developers who start from primitive programming languages in the beginning.

I would try my best to make this article as brief and simple as I could so that It could be easy for you to understand and learn from it. Since Eclipse is an IDE, It is important for us to understand first of all what is an IDE actually.

After that, we will move towards in-depth on our main topic. I want you to follow along till the end of this article carefully in order to get to know about Eclipse in detail.

1. Understanding Eclipse

1.1 what is an IDE?

An IDE is also called an Integrated Development Environment which is meant to assist a developer while writing a code. It assists a developer in many ways. An IDE is basically a source code editor for a programming language.

We can also extend its support for different programming languages by installing various plugins or extensions in them. It helps a developer to minimize the time for writing a code by automatically assisting him/her in various ways..

1.2 How does an IDE actually assist a developer?

An IDE can assist a developer in a lot of ways I’ve discussed just a few of them below so that you can understand its working:

  • An IDE assists a developer in various ways i.e. one can choose a theme of his own choice for example the ones that are seen most commonly are the dark and light themes. We can also change the color schemes for our code in an IDE exactly in accordance with our taste.
  • It would help us in differentiate among various methods, classes, interfaces, etc., and much more easily so that we can understand and work with the lengthy codes much easier way.
  • Prefix Highlighting and various error warnings are also one of the most important examples of different ways in which an IDE can assist a developer.
  • Also, by installing various plugins or extensions, we can extend the assistance of an IDE that it can offer to a developer based on the type of plugin or extension installed by the user.

1.3 What is Eclipse?

Eclipse is also such an IDE which is best known for the Java programming language as most of the Java programming is done on this IDE. It offers built-in support for Java, C/C++, and PHP programming languages. Also, it works best with these programming languages.

It is my personal experience that one can learn Java best on the Eclipse IDE. Because Java is not an easy-to-learn language and starting on an IDE as Eclipse can best assist a learner to write code and understand its functionality.

2. How to set up Eclipse Windows Development Environment?

You can easily set up an Eclipse development environment especially for Java Programming Language by following this simple step-by-step guide given below.

  1. First of all, If you want to install Eclipse for Java Programming Language then you should download and install Java JDK for windows. You can download it from here. From this link, you’ll download the latest version of Java JDK. Also, follow the following instructions in order to install java JDK for windows:
  • After you have downloaded the JDK just open it by double-clicking it and installing the JDK. I recommend you to install it in the default directory location.
  • Once the JDK is installed then you have to set the path variable in the path environment variable for windows so that you don’t have to set the path every time you’ll reboot.
  • You can set the path variable simply by typing ‘environment variable’ in the windows search bar and choosing ‘edit the windows environment variables’.
  • Once you are done with that, a window will appear and then you have to choose the ‘Environment Variables’.
  • Once you clicked on that, another window will appear from where you’ll have to look for the term ‘Path’ under the user variables and you have to double click it.
  • Then another window will be opened from where you have to choose ‘New’ and there you’ll have to add the path of your Java bin file which is located in the directory where you have installed it. In the case of the default location, you can set the variable location as :
"C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-16\bin" which is the path for default java jdk 16 installation directory".

2. Now your Java JDK is successfully installed you can simply download eclipse from this link here once you have downloaded it you can simply follow the setup instructions that it shows inside the setup and install it and you are ready to go now.

3. Once you are done with the above two steps you can set up your project and start working with it.

3. Can we use Eclipse Windows for other Programming Languages?

Eclipse is mainly used for primitive languages like Java, C/C++, and PHP. It is best known for Java programming. In the case of other modern types of programming languages, I would not recommend eclipse because it is only good with primitive ones.

For modern languages like JavaScript and Dart, I would suggest VScode which is the best IDE in today’s world that supports a great number of programming languages.
